BALFOUR
GREENHOUSES
Leo and Emmy
Reus started Balfour Greenhouses Ltd. in 1976, after moving to Canada from
a background of traditional dutch flower growing. They started out with
20,000 ft² of plastic greenhouses, producing everything from bedding
plants to english cucumbers.
The company introduced several flowering potted plants that were new to the local market and experienced early success with this strategy. In the mid-80's, when dutch breeders did breakthrough work in Holland on Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Hybrids, Leo and Emmy immediately recognized the enormous potential for year-round production of this flowering plant. New floral crops are always risky business, and the development of Kalanchoe production to the standards that Balfour Greenhouses is setting today, required a lot of patience and know how. But Leo's and Emmy's persistence paid off, and the company has been continually expanding its Kalanchoe program and product volume.

Today, Balfour Greenhouses operates on almost two hectares of glasshouse
area, equipped with state of the art technology. Dedicated staff ensures
the ongoing quality of our products as the second generation of management,
Marion and Duane VanAlstine, is prepared to take the company into the 21st
century.
